In the not-so-distant future, humanity entered the so-called "Inverted Period"

The inverted period of the planet began with the invention of an "inverted bomb" that could stop computers. The inventor of this special bomb was a scientist named Claus Brand. He developed a simple device based on nuclear reactions that emitted a special type of neutrino particle. These particles interacted with materials in computers, produced particles of a different type, which in turn inverted the charge in the so-called p-n junctions, which primarily affected the operation of computers and prevented programs and processes from running correctly.

In the end, Claus Brand did not want to entrust the development to one country and sent files with information on the development to the leadership of most mature countries.

At that time, microwave weapons were already being actively used to locally destroy computers. But the inverted bomb was more dangerous than a nuclear bomb. The world's nations adopted a pact on the non-use of inverted bombs, and within 5 years implemented programs to protect nuclear facilities from possible damage to processor electronics.

At the same time, within a few years, dozens of satellites with inverted bombs were already in orbit, configured to respond automatically in the event of a strike on the country's computer systems or the satellite itself. It was a very risky system of mutual deterrence, and one day it went off.

Beginning of the inverted period

It is said that one Monday, an accidental explosion of an inverted bomb on one of the satellites triggered a chain of automatic reactions on other satellites in many countries, and the planet was "inverted" for two days. All the computers, tablets, and phones on the planet went blank, like an overexposed film in a camera. There was no working electronics left that was more complex than a simple radio. And as long as the satellites continued to orbit in automatic and uncontrolled mode, the irradiation of the planet continued.

That time was called the "inverted period".

This accident was followed by chaos and conflicts. For several years, the world lived in great trouble. But over time, the community of nations managed to establish mutual aid and resource transportation. At the same time, everyone wanted to know who would be first to resume electronics production. To stop potential competitors, states launched airplanes with inverted emitters that radiated into neighboring countries. This was the beginning of the airplane cold war, mostly involving piston aircraft because they could operate without electronics. Humanity was actively losing its old technologies, and with the help of radiators, nations restrained each other from restoring them. This war for air superiority engulfed all countries. Soon it became clear that the main advantage was given to those aircraft that could climb faster. Therefore, the era of air bases soon began.

The air towers era

An airborne base, or simply a tower, is a system that stays in the air at an altitude of half a mile to several miles. It uses the principles of airships, but with an improved gas filler composition.

There is a plateau at the top of the base, usually at least half a mile long. But there are main bases with plateaus on top that are up to 3 or more miles long. The base height is usually at least one mile. It is an air city that accommodates several hundred people at a time.

On top of the base there is an airfield with a runway from edge to edge of the plateau. The airfield is operated by aircraft that are technically similar to those of World War II. Most of them are light single-seat fighter planes.

There are also a number of light openwork buildings on top. This is the pilots' town, with training facilities, a canteen, a meeting room, as well as a park with trees and a small stadium nearby.

There is also a heavy part at the very bottom, with workshops, hangars, factories, and a residential sector. Machine gun nests are hidden around the perimeter of the tower to defend against air attack.

Below, an arched opening runs through the entire base, providing a short emergency runway. A lifeline runs from the ground to the base to hold the entire tower as an anchor against strong wind movement, and to supply power, fuel and other resources, such as food. The line can be disconnected and the base can be moved using engines with propellers similar to those used in airships.

The secret of three rings

The tower flashes with a three-ringed logo. This is an international symbol used at all air bases around the world. Its official meaning is "interaction, cooperation, mutual respect", but it has a secret meaning as well that will be revealed throughout this story.

This generator is another invention of the scientist Klaus Brandt. Two rings kill computers and three rings supply power. Each new recruit selected to serve on the tower who successfully passes the exams receives three silver magnetic rings. These rings have a symbolic meaning and are depicted on the tower itself.

The team takes off for combat missions. They often encounter enemy aircraft.  At the moment, real combat engagements are conventionally prohibited. The airplanes can fly into foreign territories. The only thing prohibited is getting too close to enemy towers. Aircraft from neighboring towers escort one another and try to block the others. However, real armed excesses and provocations are not uncommon. Pilots also occasionally perform tasks on the ground.

The five protagonists were children when the inverted period began. They experienced sorrow, poverty, loss of loved ones, and years of chaos. But they were chosen to be trained for an elite group of pilots. And now they serve as pilots on one of the towers.

And what’s going on Earth?

The life of the Earth's inhabitants is still difficult. They engage in simple manufacturing, mining metals and fuel for the towers, and natural farming. They perceive the towers as some kind of gods' cities, which have access to all kinds of resources and can control and manage them. The leadership and elite of the countries are also located on the central largest air towers and rule the "earthlings" through their viceroys.

Different views and theories about what happened to the world have developed on Earth throughout this time. One of the popular theories believed by many ordinary earthlings is that there was no radiation from the satellites, and that all technology is actually controlled by the towers themselves to enslave people. That the towers themselves are the emitters of inverted radiation.

At the same time, the people on the towers believe that during this time without technology, real magic has developed among earthlings. Stories about almost magical technologies are passed around, but no one has yet been able to provide real evidence. Some say it's not magic, but a special kind of high technology better than those of the computer era. One of the heroes will have to experience some adventures on Earth in order to learn more about both the earthly and the heavenly. He will find out what other developments the scientist had. And he will find out the secret of the three rings that adorn all the air towers of the world.
